Churrasco Origins

Churrasco, which means ‘barbecue’ in Portuguese, has deep roots in the South American traditions of grilling and roasting meats. Its origins can be traced back to the indigenous people of South America, particularly the Guarani and Tupinambá tribes, who used open flames to cook skewered meats over pits of hot coals.

The arrival of Portuguese colonists in Brazil further enriched the practice of churrasco. The Portuguese brought European grilling techniques and introduced new seasonings and cuts of meat to the indigenous methods. Over time, this fusion of indigenous and Portuguese culinary traditions gave rise to what we now know as Brazilian churrasco.

Churrasco became integral to Brazilian culture, evolving into a social and communal dining experience. It was traditionally associated with gauchos, the South American cowboys, who roamed the pampas (grasslands) of Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. Gauchos would skewer significant cuts of meat and cook them over open flames during their cattle drives.

Today, churrasco has become a celebrated culinary tradition in Brazil and many other parts of the world. It is known for its flavorful, tender, and succulent cuts of meat, grilled to perfection. At Samba Steakhouse, we proudly continue the legacy of churrasco, offering an authentic and immersive dining experience that pays homage to this rich and flavorful tradition.
